Provide a List of Key Words and Phrases

If you are aware your case involves names and words that may cause spelling errors or grammatical issues, provide your court reporter with a list of these words and phrases. This will allow your court reporter to correct any mistakes before they happen, minimizing editing and potential questions and getting the transcript in your hands as soon as possible.

Clearly Enunciate

Avoid unnecessary vocal fillers such as “uh-huh” and “uh-uh” that can cause problems for court reporters. Steno-keyboards are set up phonetically, so it seems like these sounds would be ideal, when in reality steno-machines don’t have keys that can articulate these sounds. This will result in problems when record– not to mention, these sorts of sounds can be misinterpreted. Remind the opposing counsel and witnesses to clearly enunciate, to not speak too quickly, and to avoid these sounds.

Dress Appropriately

Dressing for success can make a world of difference for your case. Avoid attire that is too casual and instead opt for neutral suits, slacks, dresses, or skirts. If a deposition is being recorded ahead of time, remind witnesses to not wear any jewelry or clothing that could bump into the microphone and cause interference.
